Cardi B Has Broken One of the Hot 100's Most Depressing Records

Latest

Last month, Cardi B made history when her unshakable smash “Bodak Yellow” hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100. And now, three weeks later, she’s made history again, breaking the record for most weeks at the top by a solo female rapper. Yes, hooray, awesome for Cardi! And my god, that bar is abysmally low.

Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing),” the only other Hot 100 Number One by a solo female rapper, was at the top of the charts for only two weeks back in November of 1998. And…that’s it.

With three weeks at the top, Cardi has also tied with Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” as the longest-running track by a female artist at the top of the Hot 100 in ALL of 2017! We’ve only had a woman at the top of the Hot 100 for SIX WEEKS this year (not including Halsey, who was featured on that Chainsmokers song). I get that the regular heavy hitters are in between albums right now, but for female artists to be at the top for only 6 weeks of the 40 weeks of 2017 is embarrassing for the industry.
