Colombian rebels ask Miss Universe to help peace process

Beauty queens have always longed for world peace. And now one of them actually has a chance to do something about it…well, sorta.

Recently crowned Miss Universe, Paulina Vega, a 22-year-old student from Colombia, has been invited by the hemisphere’s oldest rebel group to attend peace talks with the Colombian government in Havana, Cuba.

“We have read with interest your desire to contribute to peace and reconciliation among Colombians,” reads a Feb. 6 letter addressed to Vega from FARC rebels. “We acknowledge your willingness to travel to Havana and we invite you make that visit.”

The FARC said they want to brief Vega about advances in the peace talks so she can support the process. The guerrillas said they’re willing to let her participate in the talks and will value her opinions.

Vega, who has previously expressed interest in helping the Colombian peace talks, is currently on tour in New York and has not said whether she’ll take the FARC up on its offer.
