Jewish effigy burned at anti-Muslim refugee protest in Poland
LatestPolish nationalists mixed Islamophobia with antisemitism Wednesday night, burning an effigy of a Jewish man at a protest against Muslim refugees.
Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside city hall in Wroclaw Nov. 18 to protest the admittance of Muslim refugees into Poland, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports.
At one point of the protest, organized by the National Radical Camp and All-Polish Youth, an effigy of a Haredi Orthodox Jewish man holding the flag of the European Union was set on fire—the EU flag likely intended to evoke antisemitic conspiracies of Jewish governmental control.“United Catholic Poland! National radicalism!” demonstrators shouted. “Down with the European Union!”
The JTA notes that the demonstration was likely a response to the recent coordinated attacks in Paris that killed over 120 people, which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for.
