Liberty University president: More people with guns would help 'end those Muslims'

Latest

Liberty University president Jerry Falwell, Jr. told an audience on Saturday that, if more people were carrying guns, they could “end those Muslims.”

Falwell–son of the hugely influential Rev. Jerry Falwell—was speaking to students at the university, which has played host to several presidential candidates in the 2016 race. He scoffed at the notion that gun control will help prevent events like the San Bernardino massacre.

“It just blows my mind that the president of the United States [says] that the answer to circumstances like that is more gun control,” he said, according to the Washington Post, adding, “I’ve always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in.”

He later told the Post he was referring to “Islamic terrorists.”

While some GOP candidates might not back Falwell’s comments about Muslims, they’ve certainly echoed his rejection of gun control.

“You don’t stop the bad guys by taking away our guns. You stop the bad guys by using our guns,” Ted Cruz said on Saturday, according to Politico.

Predictably, Democrats like Hillary Clinton had different reactions.

Falwell’s comments will only fuel the fears of Muslims who worry about the uptick in anti-Muslim rhetoric and activity in the wake of the San Bernardino shooting.
