Nigeria struck by consecutive suicide bombing attacks

Nigeria was hit by a series of suicide bombings Wednesday, attacks for which Boko Haram is reportedly responsible.

An attack on a busy marketplace in the eastern city of Yola yesterday killed at least 34 people, ABC News and The Associated Press report. At least 80 others were wounded in the blast.

Later that day, a pair of female suicide bombers detonated in a busy mobile phone market in the northeastern city of Kano, Agence France-Presse reports, killing at least 15 people and wounding anywhere from 53 to over 100 others.

Combined, the three explosions killed at least 49 Nigerians, with a wounded count in the triple digits.

The attacks have all been tied to Islamist terror group Boko Haram, which has been mounting an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria for the past six years. The group’s violence has killed at least 17,000 people and left at least 2.6 million others homeless.

“Nigeria’s reinvigorated, well-equipped and well-motivated armed forces and security agencies [will] overcome Boko Haram very soon,” Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said Wednesday. “[The government is] very much determined to wipe out Boko Haram in Nigeria.”
