On Poppy Day, or Remembrance Day, countries in the British Commonwealth honor armed troops who have fallen in the line of duty and raise money for veterans in need. The poppy flower has been a symbol of Remembrance since the conclusion of World War I.

London Mayor Boris Johnson participated in, and lost, the tug of war outside City Hall in an effort to get Londoners to “dig deep on London Poppy Day…in aid of the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal.”
