RNC Decides to Resume Support of Accused Sexual Predator

Latest

Less than two weeks after rescinding its backing of accused sexual predator, Roy Moore, the Republican National Committee confirmed on Monday that it would reinstate support of the Alabama Senate candidate.

The RNC’s repulsive decision comes after Donald Trump, also an accused sexual predator, explicitly endorsed Moore in a Monday morning tweet:

An RNC official confirmed it would reinstate support of Moore to the Daily Beast after it was first reported by Breitbart. Another RNC official told The Hill, “We can confirm our involvement in the Alabama Senate race.”

The RNC’s decision to support Moore, despite the accounts of multiple women who allege Moore pursued them when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers, reaches a new level of hypocrisy.

As congressional Democrats reckon with allegations of sexual misconduct against Senator Al Franken and House Representative John Conyers, the RNC has been extremely critical—the committee played a huge role forcing lawmakers to return donations from accused sexual predators, particularly Harvey Weinstein.

It seemed as though a resurgence of support for Moore might be coming when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell revalidated his candidacy on Sunday—after previously calling for Moore to step aside. When asked whether he thought Moore should be in the Senate, McConnell responded, “I’m going to let the people of Alabama make the call.”
