San Antonio Independent School District has launched an investigating into a video showing a school police officer violently restraining a female middle school student .

The video, originally posted on the Ghost-0 blog on Tuesday, shows Officer Joshua Kehm lift the student and slam her to the ground, where she appears to stop moving. Kehm then handcuffs the student and leads her away.

Local TV station WOAI identified the student as 12-year-old Janissa Valdez. In an interview with WOAI, Valdez told the station she doesn’t remember the exact moment, but she had been in the middle of a confrontation with another girl at the time.

“I was going up to her to tell her let’s go somewhere else so we could talk but that’s when the cop thought I was going at her,” she told WOAI.

WOAI also reported Valdez was checked out by doctors and doesn’t appear to have suffered lasting damage apart from a painful bump on her head.

A school spokesperson told local TV station KSAT the officer has been placed on paid leave pending the results of the investigation.

“We need to find out the details as to what occurred, but I can say that we will not tolerate excessive force in this district,” Leslie Price told KSAT
