Tumblr of What Happens to Women Who Reject Men

Latest

A day after Elliot Rodger went out on a killing spree in Santa Barbara, the hashtag #YesAllWomen was used hundreds of thousands of times by men and women sharing stories of how all women are affected by misogyny. The hashtag was used as a response to #NotAllMen, another campaign that was being used to argue the killings in Santa Barbara were an isolated incident.

Now a new Tumblr launched on Sunday called “When Women Refuse” is curating news stories of what happens when women refuse sexual advances from men they both know and don’t know. The site’s founder, Deanna Zandt, wants to raise awareness of the fact that most attacks on women don’t come with manifestos and that they happen everyday.

Zandt said she was inspired to create the Tumblr after she saw a number of men in her social networks responding to the hashtag #YesAllWomen by “digging in their heels, saying that Elliot Rodger was an individual who was mentally ill, that this awful, tragic incident was unique and a one-off sort of deal.” The idea came after she saw writer Kate Harding collecting links to other incidents on her Facebook page.

“We’re hoping that when people visit the site, and see the endless scroll of news stories, that they’ll understand we are dealing with an epidemic of everyday violence against women,” said Zandt, who co-founded Lux Digital, a digital strategy agency in New York . “These incidents are not isolated; they are part of a culture of toxicity that hurts both women and men.”

“When Women Refuse” currently includes more than two dozen stories about violence against women, including a shooting that occurred yesterday where a man in Stockton, California allegedly fired eight rounds at three women who refused to have sex with him and his friends.

The hashtag #YesAllWomen has been used more than 1 million times since Saturday.
