Two teenagers beaten outside Brooklyn mosque after Ramadan prayers

Two teenage boys were beaten near a mosque and reportedly called terrorists in Brooklyn early Sunday morning, according to police and news reports.

The NYPD confirmed to Fusion that there is a person of interest in the case, but no arrests have been made yet. A police spokesperson said Monday that the hate crimes division did look into the incident, but it is now being considered a “non-bias crime.”

The victims, aged 16 and 17, were taken to Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, the NYPD said.

BuzzFeed News, which first reported the incident, obtained surveillance footage of the beating. According to BuzzFeed News, the boys were beaten after a lengthy Ramadan prayer service at the Muslim Community Center of Brooklyn in Sunset Park around 1:18 a.m.

Mohamed Bahe, the director of the mosque, told BuzzFeed News that the assailant yelled “you fucking terrorists” before the alleged beating.

Muslims Giving Back, a nonprofit association associated with the Muslim Community Center, posted a Facebook update about the beating. “One of the victims heard the attacker shout “Terrorist!” while being punched to the ground. This is absolutely a HATE crime,” read the post.
