Wait, did Donald Trump just say that ‘Second Amendment people’ could shoot Hillary Clinton?

During a campaign rally in Wilmington, North Carolina on Tuesday, Donald Trump wondered aloud whether “the Second Amendment people” might be able to prevent Hillary Clinton from approving justices for the Supreme Court.

Trump had declared that the amendment would be erased entirely, or gutted beyond recognition during a Clinton administration.

“By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks,” he told the crowd. He then added, “although, the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know.”

If that sounds to you an awful lot like a low-key call for violence against Clinton, you’re not alone. Trump’s comments immediately raised red flags across twitter.

Typically threats made against a candidate are investigated by the United States Secret Service. It remains to be seen whether Trump’s latest remarks will follow accordingly.

UPDATE: Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook responded to Trump’s remarks late Tuesday afternoon, saying:

This is simple—What Trump is saying is dangerous. A person seeking to be President of the United States should not suggest violence in any way.

Trump campaign spokesperson Jason Miller meanwhile attributed the brewing controversy to “dishonest media”:

It’s called the power of unification—2nd Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power. And this year they will be voting in record numbers, and it won’t be for Hillary Clinton, it’ll be for Donald Trump.
