Watch Lena Waithe's Historic and Electrifying Emmys Speech

Latest

Lena Waithe has made history.

Waithe became the first black woman to both earn a nomination and receive an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her incredible “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None, which she co-wrote with Aziz Ansari. Wisely, Ansari didn’t interrupt her as she made an incredible speech.

After making a Maxine Waters reference, and, thanking her mother, team, and chosen family, Waithe acknowledged the queer community:

And last but not certainly not least my LBGTQIA family, Isee each and every one of you. The things that make us different, those are our superpowers. Every day, when you walk out the door, put on your imaginary cape and go out there and conquer the world, because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it. And for everybody out there that showed so much love to this episode, thank you for embracing a little Indian boy from South Carolina and a little queer black girl from the South Side of Chicago. We appreciate it more than you could ever know.

Ah, amazing.
