Watch Mark Ruffalo get real about racism in Hollywood

Latest

On ABC, just seconds before the beginning of the Academy Awards, Robin Roberts asked Mark Ruffalo about the lack of diversity in Hollywood. And Mark Ruffalo went all in. (Full disclosure: Fusion is partly owned by ABC.)

“That’s a real issue. It’s time for our country to have this conversation in an earnest way,” Ruffalo said. “It’s happening in the criminal justice system, the education system, and it should be happening here in Hollywood. Who else to represent the needs of these than their fellow liberals, you know?”

This isn’t the first time Ruffalo has spoken out about inclusivity in Hollywood. In January, Ruffalo considered boycotting the Oscars, despite being nominated. He told BBC Breakfast: “The entire American system is rife with white privilege racism. It goes into our justice system.”

He went on then to explain: “There’s a regressive slide towards separatism, towards racial and religious disharmony, and that’s not the Hollywood that I want to leave behind. That’s not the industry, that’s not the America that I want to leave behind.”
