11 stylish concertgoers spotted at the Roots Picnic

Latest

Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic may be a summer music festival, but with Philly-bred celebrities both on the lineup (The Roots, Lil Uzi Vert) and in the crowd (Jill Scott, Meek Mill, Jazzy Jeff, Will Smith), it feels more like a family reunion and a celebration of the City of Brotherly Love. At this year’s ninth annual Picnic, which took place on Saturday, June 4, Meek Mill joined Lil Uzi Vert on stage, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff performed their timeless jam “Summertime” with Willow Smith, and the Roots and Usher performed a seamless mashup set.

Diversity is truly what sets the Roots Picnic apart from other popular music festivals. Not only does it showcase a a healthy mix of distinct musical styles—from gospel and soul singer Leon Bridges to the Afrobeats and a grime DJ set from Everyday People’s DJ MOMA to trap music from Future and Migos—but the people in the audience reflect the diverse population of Philly. There’s plenty of diversity in their Picnic style, too, although we did see several pairs of Rihanna’s Puma creepers and Kanye‘s Pablo shirts.

We found 11 stylish concert attendees and spoke with them about their killer looks and their favorite artists.

Elijah Watson, Okayplayer writer
On his shirt: “I’m not a Selena Gomez fan. But [this shirt] comes from a great DIY artist Meaghan Garvey, [a.k.a.] Moneyworth. She made this in reference to the movie Spring Breakers. Gucci Mane is in the movie. Glad you’re out, Gucci, love you!”

On his favorite performer: “Kaytranada has the best song of 2016, I would say. Plus, it’s great to have a deep house album by a fucking black person.”

Victoria Garcia

Kimber Bowman
On Usher: “He can still dance even though he’s getting up there in age. My first memory of Usher is probably ‘Nice and Slow.’ I had a huge crush on him when I was like eight years old.”

Tijuana Williams
On dancing backup for Beyoncé: “Being her dancer was really overwhelming at first, but now it’s starting to settle in, so it’s really great.”

Kisa Mugwanya
On her outfit: “I got this made in Uganda. I’m actually from there. Last time I was there, I was like, let me get an authentic African outfit that is literally made and tailored there.”

Erika Bennett
On her Rihanna shoes: “I didn’t have to wait in line. [Laughs.] I have a connect at the sneaker store and she held them for me the day they came out. I have the trainers and I have the other creepers that came out the first time. I love Rihanna, so anything she makes, I’m just going to buy them.”

Sosena Solomon

Tiffany Keosombath

Kat Campbell
On who Metro Boomin shouldn’t trust: “Donald Trump. There is a laundry list of things that are wrong there. And vegan cheese, because it just doesn’t taste that good.”

Stephanye Watts and friend
