Judge Carrie Ann Inaba complimented Biles on her displays of emotion throughout the dance, and suggested she dance a little less on the beat in the future. Fine fine.

Then it was BERGERON TIME.

“I gotta quickly ask: I was waiting for you to smile at some of the compliments–you didn’t,” Bergeron said, joining the ranks of men who seriously can’t stop commenting on women’s smiles.

The camera zoomed in for a close up. At first, Biles shrugged. Somewhere off camera, someone exclaimed in her defense,“she’s being real!”

“Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals,” the 20-year-old who has four Olympic gold medals and is the most decorated American gymnast of all time, said.

“Oh! Okay,” Bergeron replied before the judging moved on.

You can watch the whole thing go down here.

Biles went on to earn 9's from all of the judges for the routine, for a grand total of 36 out of 40.

Later, in a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Dancing with the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy sided with Biles.

“She kept it real, and sometimes the truth hurts,” Chmerkovskiy said. “Smiles don’t get you gold medals, and I agree with her as an athlete. I agree with her, and I side with her.”

Host Tom Bergeron tweeted about the incident, admitting his question was “clumsy.”

“The question I should have asked (and have of many contestants) was “What’s your reaction to the judges comments,” the host tweeted.

Ironically, Inaba had told Biles in an earlier dance that she should have been smiling less. It’s almost as though there’s no way to get it right.
