Amy Schumer's most recent coup: opening for Madonna

Latest

Amy Schumer began her career telling jokes from the stages of minor-league indie comedy clubs in New York. From there, she went on to winning fourth place on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, earning a self-titled sketch show on Comedy Central, and is about to make her big screen debut in Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck, opening July 17. And now, Schumer’s hustle has resulted in performing for a pop legend: she announced via Twitter that she will be opening for Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour’s New York City shows.

Schumer joked that this childhood sing-along session landed her the job. Famous for sexually-charged characters, bawdy standup, and purposely face-planting at Kimye’s feet, the comic is set to make her first ever appearance at Madison Square Garden. Could this mean the timeless Material Girl is joining Schumer and transitioning into stand up comedy?

Fortunately not. But it’s interesting that Madonna is opting to open her show with Schumer’s raucous punchlines instead of recruiting a burgeoning pop talent. Lately, Schumer has attained a reputation for her potent, outspoken feminism on Inside Amy Schumer. From sketches such as Girl You Don’t Need Makeup to a star-studded crew on Last Fuckable Day and Milk, Milk, Lemonade, she tackles double beauty standards, Hollywood ageism, misogynistic hip-hop culture, and many other sensitive issues — it’s rowdy social commentary. Her jokes not only entertain, but send a message. Madonna has also come out as an outspoken feminist and is no stranger to entertainment’s it girls. Her latest video, Bitch I’m Madonna, features pop female powerhouses Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and more.

On September 16, 17, and 19, Amy and Madonna will showcase their respective talents at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center. As queens in their individual fields, theirs will be a breakthrough collaboration of different generations and genres.
