An elementary school haunted house planned to use the Orlando massacre to scare kids

Administrators at Chicago’s Fernwood Elementary School were forced to backtrack after agreeing to co-host an evangelical Halloween haunted house that used the Pulse nightclub shootings as inspiration for its “trip through hell” theme.

The “Christian interactive experience,” hosted by Tyrone Tappler Productions, also reportedly planned to work in elements of the 2015 Charleston shooting and abortion clinics as ideas meant to scare people, according to the Windy City Times. It was canceled before it could actually take place.

“You will walk in 10 Rooms and encounter individuals who will make choices,” the house’s Eventbrite page reads. “The choice is life or death; sin or salvation; heaven or hell. The scenes will be action-packed, real and jaw dropping.”

According to Chicago public school spokesperson Michael Passman, the organizers at Fernwood were not aware of the haunted house’s theme and would never had agreed to host the event if they’d been privy to the details.

“The event organizers mischaracterized the true content of the event, and we did not approve any association with the activities the organizers have now advertised,” Passman told the Times. “The event will not be held on CPS property.”

On Saturday morning, Tyrone Tappler took to Twitter to explain that the haunted house had been canceled amidst complaints from locals who’d caught wind of what had been planned.
