The Boston Police Department has apologized after sharing a very special message in honor of Black History Month—all about how great a white guy was.

On Sunday evening, the official Twitter account for the BPD offered the following Black History Month “tribute” to legendary Boston Celtics basketball coach Red Auerbach, who was white.

As many, many, many people immediately pointed out, celebrating Black History Month with a shout-out to a very special white guy is a pretty bad idea.

While the department did re-share an earlier message honoring Russell, it took nearly six full hours for the cops to fully come to their senses and delete their initial tweet. In its place, the BPD offered a classic “sorry not sorry” apology.
