Democrats Strike Deal With Trump on DACA, Border Wall

Latest

The Democrats, it seems, have President Trump wrapped around their finger. That is until something younger and shinier walks by. Senator Chuck Schumer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced on Wednesday night that they had struck a deal with Trump over protecting DACA recipients and his overpromised wall.

While Pelosi and Schumer did not elaborate on the deal’s specifics, they released a joint statement alluding to its general elements: DACA recipients will be protected and, surprise, there will be no wall. “We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President,” the statement reads. “The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both parties.”

In a separate statement, the White House offered a more measured interpretation of Trump’s dinner with Pelosi and Schumer, the New York Times reported. Their discussion was “constructive” and they discussed several policy issues, apparently. “These topics included tax reform, border security, DACA, infrastructure and trade. This is a positive step toward the president’s strong commitment to bipartisan solutions for the issues most important to all Americans,” the White House said. “The administration looks forward to continuing these conversations with leadership on both sides of the aisle.” One official who spoke to the Times also suggested that they had not reached a deal on the wall and that Trump “stressed” his interest in seeing it funded.

Trump has already threatened a government shutdown over the wall, which is already being called a fence. So please, spare me more “Trump is an Independent” takes. Trump is a pavlovian dog, trained to ratings, and making deals in hopes that the public stops “fucking hating” him for a single second.
