Devout Catholic Sean Spicer Was Basically the Only Top Trump Staffer Who Wasn't Allowed to Meet the Pope :(

Latest

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer (probably) got sent to bed without dessert and definitely didn’t get to meet the Pope during President Trump’s visit to the Vatican on Wednesday, despite the fact that Spicer is a devout Catholic.

Although Spicer is along on Trump’s nine-day, five-country trip, his first as president, the spokesman, whose argumentative style and oversized suits provided regular fodder for Saturday Night Live, was notably absent from his meeting with the pontiff. Trump was joined by his wife Melania, eldest daughter Ivanka, Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, State Department aide Brian Hook, his head of security, longtime staffer Hope Hicks, and even Dan Scavino, the guy who occasionally gets to run Trump’s Twitter, for his meet-and-greet with the Pope, Politico reported.

Although a White House official confirmed to the site that both sides of the meeting agreed to limit the size of their groups, members of the administration who aren’t practicing Catholics gave up their spots so Catholic staffers could meet Pope Francis.

Spicer, who told reporters earlier this year that he gave up alcohol for Lent and was mocked for wearing ashes on his forehead during an Ash Wednesday cable news appearance, declined to comment on why he wasn’t included in the envoy.

This is just getting sad.
