Donald Trump's response to Khizr Khan is as appalling as you'd expect

This is what Donald Trump said to ABC News about Khizr Khan, the father of a slain Muslim soldier whose denunciation of Trump at the Democratic National Convention made him instantly iconic, and who said that Trump has “sacrificed nothing” in his life:

“Who wrote that? Did Hillary’s scriptwriters write it? I think I’ve made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. I’ve had tremendous success. I think I’ve done a lot.”

This is what Trump said about Khizr Khan’s wife, Ghazala, who stood silently behind him during his DNC speech:

“If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”

In fact, as Ghazala Khan told MSNBC, she did not speak because she was too wracked with grief over her dead son.

On Sunday, Khizr Khan responded to Trump in The Washington Post. Khan said his wife didn’t respond because she is too emotional when she talks about her son. But Trump’s words, Khan said, were “typical of a person without a soul.”

Khan also appeared on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday morning, saying Trump is “totally unfit for the presidency” because he lacks empathy. Khan also called upon Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to withdraw their support for Trump.

“It is a moral obligation—history will not forgive them,” Khan said.

Trump posted two tweets about Khan on Sunday morning:
