Elizabeth Warren Tries to Defend Kirsten Gillibrand From Trump, Doesn't Quite Stick the Landing

Latest

After our president started Tuesday out by suggesting New York Senator Kirstin Gillibrand “would do anything” for campaign donations—which was widely read as a gross and harassing statement—her colleague Elizabeth Warren tried to come to Gillibrand’s defense but didn’t quite stick the landing.

Warren, who’s no stranger to Donald Trump’s ire, tweeted:

Two things went awry with this well-meaning response to Trump’s antics, the most obvious being Warren accidentally implying that Gillibrand would heroically persist with her…….sexual behavior that could invoke the wrath of slut-shamers?

Of course, Warren’s misfire inspired bad faith readings from the worst kinds of online people, like FDRLST contributor Bethany Mandel:

Far more troubling, however, is Warren’s invoking #ShePersisted, the feminist hashtag supporters created after she was infamously silenced by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell during the vote to confirm Jeff Sessions in February. Promoting your own catchphrase will always be lame.
