Following TV success, Supergirl is getting her own comic book again

Following the success of CBS’ Supergirl, DC Comics have decided to bring Kara Zor-El back into the world of comic books with a new series that ties into the television show. Supergirl: Digital First Vol. 1 will focus on Supergirl’s adventures before the events of the first season of the show as well as filling in the gaps between episodes.

“Kara Zor-El landed on Earth after many years stuck in en route from her now-destroyed home planet Krypton, having followed in her famous cousin Superman’s footsteps,” DC’s press release explains. “But does National City want a Supergirl? Is the world ready for another super hero?”

One of Supergirl‘s greatest strengths as a show this season has been its willingness to forego lots of complicated backstory in favor of focusing on Kara’s life as a newly public superhero in a new city. On the flip side, it leaves a lot of the character’s early life somewhat murky and makes the show’s references to Superman feel somewhat shoehorned in.

Not only does a Supergirl comic give new fans a deeper dive into the character in ways that a television show can’t, it reflects that DC’s committed to standing behind its decision to feature her across different media. Supergirl was one of the casualties of DC’s New 52 event earlier this year that canceled a number of different titles in favor of creating a broader, more diverse lineup of stories for the publisher.

Though Supergirl: Digital First Vol. 1 is meant to string the events of the television show together, it could also be the first step toward bringing Supergirl back to the mainstream comics where she belongs.
