GOP Senate Candidate Vows to Blow the Capitol to Smithereens in New Campaign Ad

Latest

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who’s running for Senate, released a hell of a campaign video on Wednesday night where he indulges in far-right lawmakers’ ultimate fever dream: blowing up the Capitol once and for all.

“We fought Obama’s war on our jobs and our culture,” he says in the ad, which boasts that Morrisey single-handedly “blocked Obama’s illegal amnesty” (West Virginia and nine other states dropped lawsuits against the federal government after Donald Trump killed the DACA program) and saved coal mining jobs by fighting Obama’s Clean Power Plan.

Then it gets really weird.

“Let’s take on Washington with our West Virginia conservative values,” he continues, as a very fake-looking mountain, which was peacefully sitting in the backdrop, breaks free and starts floating toward Washington like a rogue planet bent on destruction. “Let’s not just change Washington, let’s blow it up and reinvent it.”

The mountain then smashes the U.S. Capitol to smithereens. We’re left to imagine that there are no survivors except Morrisey, the One True Conservative, to rebuild our capital city now that the liberal scourge has been eliminated.

Hokey video aside, Morrisey is a rising Republican star looking to unseat Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, one of the Senate’s most vulnerable members. Manchin is something of a Democrat in name only who’s voted with Trump’s agenda two-thirds of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight. In what’s shaping up to be a true battle of the baddies, let’s hope the poorly-edited ad wars only continue ticking up from here.
