Here are the 111 inmates whose sentences were just commuted by President Obama

Latest

President Obama commuted the sentences of 111 federal inmates on Tuesday, continuing his drive to reduce prison terms for individuals convicted of drug crimes.

Most of the inmates were convicted of nonviolent drug charges, and a total of 39 of the inmates were serving life sentences. With today’s numbers, Obama has now commuted the sentences of 325 people this month alone, the most of any president since Gerald Ford. In total, he’s granted 673 commutations during his presidency.

The President has picked up the pace of clemencies over the course of 2016, as his time in office narrows and the chance of Congress passing a comprehensive criminal justice reform bill seems less likely.

“While I expect that the President will continue to grant commutations through the end of this administration, the individualized nature of this relief highlights the need for bipartisan criminal justice reform legislation,” Neil Eggleston, the White House Counsel, wrote in a blog post announcing today’s grants.

Some of those granted clemency will be released at the end of this year or in early 2017; others have their sentences reduced or have an early release contingent on their joining a drug treatment program.

And 72 of the 111 inmates received assistance from Clemency Project 2014, a project by several nonprofit groups to give pro bono legal help to inmates to help prepare petitions for clemency.

Here’s the full list of individuals who are going home early, provided by the White House:
