Hillary Clinton Blames Everyone and Everything but Herself for the Election: An Incomplete List

Hillary Clinton spoke at the Code Conference today, telling tech reporters Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher that, “Look, I take responsibility for every decision I made, but that’s not why I lost, so I think it’s important that we learn the real lessons from this last campaign.” OK. Here are the real reasons that Clinton lost the presidential election to Donald Trump, according to her:

-the broke Democratic Party and its bad data: “It was bankrupt, it was on the verge of insolvency, its data was mediocre to poor, non-existent, wrong. I had to inject money into it.”

-James Comey: “He dumped that on me on October 28, and I immediately start falling.”

-the New York Times: “They covered [my emails] like it was Pearl Harbor.”

-misogyny: “You know, men got paid for the speeches they made. I got paid for the speeches I made.”

-Democrats not doing enough blogs: “...we’ve got to get a lot better, and that includes content.”

-the electoral college: “I won 3 million more votes than the other guy.”

-Russian collusion with the Trump campaign: “The Russians, in my opinion, and based on the intel and counter intel people I’ve talked to, could not have known how best to weaponize that information unless they had been guided…Guided by Americans.”

-excessively high expectations: “I was the victim of a very broad assumption that I was going to win.”

-the Sinclair Group: “...local TV is still incredibly powerful.”

-That darn fake news: “The other side was using content that was just flat-out false and delivering it in a very personalized way.”

Her comments today were accurate, if incomplete—each of the people and entities that she identified were at least partially responsible for the election result. But “fuck everything and blame everyone” includes the candidate and campaign. Clinton and her staffers deserve at least some blame, and are unwilling to publicly accept it.
