Over the past 48 hours, improvised explosive devises have been either mailed or hand-delivered to a number of prominent Democratic public officials including former Presidents Obama and Clinton, liberal philanthropist George Soros, and CNN’s New York office.
In spite of the fact that all the recipients—who thus far have not been injured by any of the attempted bombings—are frequent targets of President Donald Trump and his hoards of MAGA chuds, prominent denizens of the right-wing fever swamp wasted no time musing out loud that maybe Democrats are trying to bomb....themselves?
Leading the charge was, you guessed it, the president’s favorite source of information and entertainment: Fox News, where guest and former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker made sure everyone knew that just because the bomber(s?) seemed to be running down a list of the President’s favorite boogiemen, that doesn’t mean this whole thing might not a *deep breath* false flag.
“We’re already seeing a little bit of a pattern,” Swecker told Outnumbered co-host Harris Faulkner on Wednesday. “[Investigators are] going to be looking at this as a potential terrorist motive, whether it’s on one side or the other.”
He continued (emphasis mine):
As you correctly pointed out earlier, this doesn’t necessarily mean someone is espousing some sort of conservative ideology and targeting Democrats. It could be someone who is trying to get the Democratic vote out and incur sympathy.
And here I thought most GOTV operations consisted largely of stuff like bussing senior citizens to the polls. Silly me!
Swecker’s, um, let’s call it “fanciful” speculation comes amidst a larger chorus of “experts,” pundits, and right-wing cranks eager to explain why bombing Democrats is actually good for, um, Democrats.
CNN did it:
Ann Coulter got in on the action:
As did Turning Point USA spokesperson Candace Owens, who made a galaxy brain-level leap to connect Wednesday’s mail bombs with the caravan of Central American asylum seekers currently crossing through Mexico en route to the U.S.’ Southern border.
So far, to be clear, the FBI has not named any suspects or listed any possible motive for the allegedly connected spate of bombings.
