Lin-Manuel Miranda Drops a Puerto Rico Benefit Song and Ramps Up His Attacks on Trump

Latest

Donald Trump may have set the bar for responding well to the crisis in Puerto Rico impossibly low (as in, dug a six foot hole for the bar) but today, Lin-Manuel Miranda still went above and beyond.

The brains behind Hamilton teamed up with over 20 different Latinx artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Luis Fonsi, Rita Moreno, Marc Anthony, and Fat Joe, to put out a benefit song, the proceeds of which go to the Hispanic Federation’s hurricane relief efforts.

The track, “Almost Like Praying,” takes inspiration from the iconic West Side Story number “Maria” and includes the names of all 78 towns in Puerto Rico. Miranda told NPR he included all the names after reading that people in Puerto Rican towns felt forgotten. As for the song’s impressive list of vocalists, for the most part, Miranda managed to assemble them by putting the call out on Twitter.

While Miranda has been incredibly productive in actively creating something positive, he’s also managed to find time to double down on his criticism of Trump and his non-handling of the situation.

You know it’s 2017 when everyone’s favorite theater nerd is putting more effort into helping American citizens than the president of the United States.
