Republican Sen. Chuck “woe is me” Grassley announced on Friday that he will step down as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, clearing the way for Sen. Lindsey Graham—a screaming, ass-kissing, goblin of a man—to take charge of one of Congress’ most powerful panels.

Graham confirmed his intent to assume the chair of the Judiciary Committee, telling Bloomberg’s Sahil Kapur that he looked forward to “bipartisan solutions to issues, confirming judges, and oversight.” He later tweeted his thanks to Grassley, calling the outgoing chair someone whose “leadership serves as a model to us all.”

As a reminder, Grassley’s “leadership” gave us a farce of a Supreme Court confirmation hearing punctuated by grotesque partisan screeds. And last time Lindsey Graham was in the Judiciary Committee’s spotlight, during those same hearings for now-Associate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, he used the opportunity to scream that “this is hell!” and make oblique references to convicted rapist Bill Cosby. So, yeah, it’s gonna be a real hoot when this guy is in charge of “bipartisan solutions.”

The prospect of a Graham chairmanship of the Senate committee which sets the tone for America’s legal system for decades to come is the latest milestone in the South Carolina Republican’s transformation from standard issue GOP ghoul to ur-toady for the Trump administration. Suffice to say, his willingness to debase himself in the face of the White House has become one of the more fascinating and painful train-wrecks to watch in politics—not because it comes as a surprise, but for the sheer naked brazenness with which Graham has taken to licking the president’s boots.

Grassley, meanwhile, will head to the Senate’s powerful Finance Committee, where he will presumably continue the GOP’s agenda of fucking over the public when it comes to taxes and healthcare.
