Look At This Fucking Chart

Here’s a headline that goes a long ways in describing the political hell of our current moment, published today by The Washington Post: “Democrats and Republicans are increasingly divided on the value of teaching black history.”

Wow, OK, that sounds bad. And it is.

As the Post goes on to detail, there’s been a long-standing divide when you ask black Americans and white Americans if there’s already enough instruction on black history in our schools. But a steep partisan divide is a newer development: a poll conducted in February found a stunning divide between Democrats and Republicans on whether we should be teaching more black history, with 67% of Democrats saying we should and just 10% of Republicans saying the same. That means there’s a 57-point difference between the sides of the aisle on whether our schools should give a shit about black history at all. (Also, come on Democrats: just 67%? Do better.)

And the divide has gotten worse over the last 18 years: Democrats haven’t changed their stance since they were surveyed on the same question by CBS News in 2000 while Republicans are now 30 points more likely to say our schools should actually be teaching less black history. Republicans are nuts! Look at this chart!

When you look at the racist policies that Republicans put forward, it’s no wonder why.
