Looks like Will & Grace is coming back for 10 episodes

It seems as though NBC is jumping on the nostalgia bandwagon with a revival of Will & Grace.

“It’s back,” said Leslie Jordan, who guest starred on the show as the character Beverley Leslie, in a radio interview. “Here’s the way it works: NBC has ordered 10 episodes. It’ll be for next season, so they’ll [film] in July.” NBC has not confirmed the show’s return yet, though there have been other rumors something’s in the works. Megan Mullally (who played Karen, one of the four main characters) seemed to suggest as much last month in an interview with PrideSource when asked if the show was coming back.

“Well, OK. All I can say is that there is a very good chance that that might happen,” she said. “It’s not happening right this second. I mean, we’re not rehearsing or anything like that. But there is a very good chance that something is going to materialize. [I] can’t really talk about it or say anything, because you know how it is.” The cast reuniting for a 10 minute episode about the 2016 election back in September sparked questions about whether there would be a revival. As Fusion’s Molly Fitzpatrick wrote, the clip raises some valid concerns about racist jokes and whether we really need a revival.

A few years ago, Vice President Joe Biden spoke to the significant social impact the show had. “I think Will & Grace probably did more to educate the American public [on gay people] than almost anything anybody has ever done so far,” he said. While Will & Grace broke ground and helped many people become more comfortable with the idea of homosexuality, it’s also been criticized for it’s stereotypical depiction of gay characters. Perhaps the biggest challenge a revival would face (beyond avoiding racist jokes) will be remaining true to the original series while simultaneously moving past the stereotypes to make a season that doesn’t seem antiquated for today’s audiences.
