Just one day after walking out of prison a free woman, Chelsea Manning has shared her first post-incarceration photo with the world. It is the first time the public has seen her since she came out as a trans woman.
The picture, posted on Manning’s Twitter and Instagram pages, is also our first look at Manning since she entered a federal penitentiary more than seven years ago, after having shared a massive trove of documents about the Iraq War with Wikileaks. Manning’s 35-year prison sentence was commuted by President Obama this past January.
Shortly after her release, Manning posted three other pictures on social media, detailing her long-awaited return to normal life. First, a shot of her first steps as a free woman:
Followed by a shot of a slice of pizza:
And a toast to freedom:
One week before her release, Manning wrote a short note thanking those supporters who have helped her for the past seven years.
“For the first time,” she said, “I can see a future for myself as Chelsea.”
