Meet Mariah Carey, LEGO Batman's new Commissioner Gordon

Latest

If I asked you to imagine Commissioner James “Jim” Gordon of the Gotham Police District, who would come to mind? This cartoon, Gary Oldman, and Mariah Carey, right? Right.

According to Deadline, the Elusive Chanteuse is in late-stage talks with Warner Bros. to voice the no-nonsense cop in the Batman-themed sequel to last year’s wildly successful Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie.

Though Commissioner Gordon’s gone through a number of re-imaginings in the decades that he’s been patrolling Gotham’s crime-infested streets, the character has, historically, always been white and male. Carey taking on the role would be Gordon’s most drastic update since last year, when Jim became the new Batman in Bruce Wayne’s stead.

If Carey does end up taking signing onto the project, she’ll be joined by Will Arnett’s Batman, Rosario Dawson’s Batgirl, and Zach Galifianakis’s Joker. One can only hope that this Commissioner will forego the Batsignal in favor of a whistle note that only Bat-themed vigilantes can hear.

UPDATE: Comic Book Resources is now reporting that Carey has been tapped to voice Gotham’s mayor and not its police Commissioner. We’ll see if that turns out to be true. Fingers crossed for a gender-bent Jane Gordon.
