Melissa McCarthy addresses the hordes of frenzied 'Ghostbusters'-hating dudes

Melissa McCarthy addressed the ongoing “controversy” about the upcoming, all-female Ghostbusters remake in an interview with The Guardian on Saturday.

A horde of concerned stewards of classic film—sorry, that’s actually angry baby-men—has swarmed around the film, which stars McCarthy along with Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig, for months, accusing it of destroying a cinematic icon and turning its trailer into the most-disliked trailer in YouTube history. (There have also been concerns about the film’s handling of Jones, who plays the sole black character.)

McCarthy, however, took the kerfuffle in stride in her conversation with The Guardian:

“All those comments – ‘You’re ruining my childhood!’ I mean, really,” McCarthy says drily. “Four women doing any movie on earth will destroy your childhood?” She shrugs. “I have a visual of those people not having a Ben [Falcone, her husband], not having friends, so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the internet. I just hope they find a friend.”

That’s more decorous than the intervention of the film’s director, Paul Feig, who told the New York Daily News, “Geek culture is home to some of the biggest assholes I’ve ever met in my life.”
