Standing on a balcony overlooking the Miami skyline and a 19-story LED display of a woman dancing on the side of a building, a friend recently thought: "This would make a great obnoxious Instagram photo."
And just a few months ago, he might have taken advantage of the opportunity to snap the ultimate #balconylife pic and strike envy in the hearts of his social media followers. However, that kind of Instabragging has become increasingly passé. It's no longer cool to Do It For The Gram.
Claudia Oshry, a 20-year-old NYU student behind the successful @girlwithnojob Instagram account, agrees.
"Instagram feeds are transitioning," she said. "I don't care about vacation selfies anymore. Instagram is becoming a platform for comedy and entertainment; it's taken a turn to where it's not even social."
If the death of the vacation selfie is indeed imminent, Instagram comedy is alive and well. There's a growing crop of comedians whose fame is a direct function of Instagram success. Here's a look at some essential Instacomedians and a sample of their best work.
