People Dancing Alone to Ginuwine's 'Pony'
LatestI believe it was Shakespeare who said “Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance.” No Tumblr embodies that so purely as “Dancing Alone to Pony,” a beautifully-curated collection of videos of people gyrating sensually to Ginuwine’s “Pony.”
The beauty of the site is its simplicity. It’s all rather elegant: just videos of people dancing. To “Pony.” Alone.
And why “Pony”? Well, there’s the fact that Ginuwine’s iconic video for the song features him dancing alone — literally, at times, but also figuratively. He is alone in a harsh world, an object yearning to assert dominance over another, to tame and to be tamed.
And so some dance — alone, to “Pony” — to express dominion over their own bodies, to dare you, challenge you to look at them. They are the object and the subject — all too human, and yet utterly animal.
Several dance alone in tank tops, their exposed flesh juxtaposed against a barren, metal and concrete backdrop — commentary, perhaps, on the vulnerability of man in an industrial world, a riot of individual movement and expression in a world dominated by increased automation.
Others dance alone in a flood of red light, a brutal if unsubtle expression of what Foucault described as “a deployment quite different from the law, even if it is locally dependent on procedures of prohibition, [which] has ensured, through a network of interconnecting mechanisms, the proliferation of specific pleasures and the multiplication of disparate sexualities.”
And some dance alone while wearing a vest.
Enjoy.
