Powerful photos: Black congressional staffers stage mass walkout
LatestOn Thursday afternoon, hundreds of Congressional staff members staged a walkout to protest the lack of indictments for the police officers who killed Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Many of the protesters held the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” position that has been used in the Ferguson protests.
The mass walkout was organized by African American staffers on the Hill, according to The Daily Beast.
“As black staffers on Capitol Hill, we saw a stark disconnect,” one organizer told The Daily Beast. “While we hold education credentials and broad access in the overall political system, often when we walk outside, we contend with the fact that we are seen as dangerous, merely because of the color of our skin.”
