Since 1875, 140 horses — and 140 of the adorable human barnacles who professionally adorn them — have won the Kentucky Derby. As a general rule, their names are very, very strange.

Why? Well, a complex set of rules governs the naming of thoroughbred racehorses, and many owners find creative ways to combine the names of the mare and sire to reflect a thoroughbred's pedigree. (Alternate theory: Rich people are crazy.)
