More than two months after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, the small island is still in a state of crisis, with scores of residents still without electricity or shelter. And while the Trump administration has continuously failed to address Puerto Rico’s serious condition, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz has made a point of thanking New York for helping the island in its time of need.

“I am asking the press to shout out an S.O.S. because we are dying here,” she said during a Puerto Rican Heritage event in New York City on Monday night. “And the first one that answered that call was New York State.”
