Steve Harvey went on a hideously racist rant about Asian men
LatestAsian Americans have been utterly disrespected onscreen and in Hollywood in general.
Yes, there have been some milestone moments, like ABC’s Fresh Off The Boat, Aziz Ansari’s Masters of None, Riz Ahmed starring in The Night Of, and Steven Yeun from The Walking Dead on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. But instead of there being a significant increase in representation, Asian actors are fighting to be seen and their roles are getting whitewashed by actors like Tilda Swinton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson, and Matt Damon.
Now, to add insult to injury, comedian Steve Harvey deemed Asian men “undateable” in a grossly racist rant during a recent segment of The Steve Harvey Show. And although Harvey has made huge mistakes on national television before, this was something he didn’t seem to have any remorse for.
The Angry Asian Man blog was the first to notice the repugnant moment.
During his show, the comedian and self-proclaimed dating expert was attempting to make fun of dating books with ridiculous concepts and came across a book titled, How To Date A White Woman: A Practical Guide For Asian Men, which is, indeed, quite ridiculous. But, instead of ragging on how the idea of the book overall was comical, he centered in on the “Asian men” part. The rant that followed was truly shocking—especially when you consider the discrimination Asian men already face in the dating world.
Harvey said that the book could have been very short. “Excuse me, do you like Asian men?” he asked rhetorically. He then answered his own question: “No. Thank you.” End of book.
He then made up a new book. “How to Date a Black Woman: A Practical Guide [for] Asian Men? Same thing. ‘You like Asian men?’ I don’t even like Chinese food. It don’t stay with you no time… I don’t eat what I can’t pronounce.”
Yeah, it’s pretty gross.
Harvey is scheduled to host the Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines. I hope he’s not expecting a warm welcome.
