Crime isn't new, but the way people are using technology to capture it is.
16 year-old Maxwell Marion Morton is currently serving time on first-degree murder charges in a juvenile detention center in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in connection with the death of another teen named Ryan Mangan. Triblive.com reports that Morton posed with the corpse of Mangan after shooting him in the face. The incident happened in Mangan’s home, where his mother found him last Wednesday.
Morton sent the incriminating selfie to a friend using Snapchat, presumably trusting that it would disappear after a few seconds. But the friend allegedly took a screenshot, and the friend's mother contacted authorities.
According to a police affidavit obtained by Triblive.com:
“(Police) received a copy of the photo which depicted the victim sitting in the chair with a gunshot wound to the face. It also depicts a black male taking the ‘selfie,' with his face facing the camera and the victim behind the actor. The photo had the name ‘Maxwell' across the top.”
Morton also allegedly sent text messages that read, “Told you I cleaned up the shells,” and “Ryan was not the last one.”
A police search of Morton’s residence brought forth a 9mm handgun, which is still undergoing ballistic tests. A hearing for Morton is scheduled for February 19. Until then, we'd advise him to stay off all social media, ephemeral or not.
