Texas Governor Greg Abbott Is a Shitposting Dum-Dum

Latest

Folks, I’m afraid it’s my unfortunate duty to inform you that Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott is well on his way to transitioning from “extremely bad politician” to “extremely bad shitposter online.”

In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, Abbott—who is high in the running for “Republican politician with his head stuck furthest up Donald Trump’s ass”—tweeted what he thought was an absolutely brutal takedown of…umm…people who oppose fascism.

The only problem is that the quote—complete with 9Gag attribution!—is complete bullshit. As Gizmodo’s Matt Novak pointed out two whole years ago, the adage most likely originated with Louisiana Governor Huey Long, a Southern populist who didn’t think the New Deal went far enough. (Long’s approach to racial discrimination, however: not so great.)

That said, if Abbott is looking for an more inspirational quotes he can misattribute, perhaps he should try this one, commonly—but mistakenly—traced back to Sinclair Lewis: When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.

Update, 11:40 a.m.: After nearly 10 hours, Gov. Abbott finally deleted the tweet. I’ve replaced it with a screen grab above.
