The officer charged with Laquan McDonald's murder was released from jail

Last week, a white Chicago police officer was arrested and charged with the murder of a local black teenager. Although he was initially held without bail, Officer Jason Van Dyke was released from jail on Monday after a judge allowed him to post bond, The Associated Press reports.

Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder for shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald—who was armed with a knife—16 times in 15 seconds. Dashcam footage of the 2014 shooting, released shortly after Van Dyke’s arrest, shows McDonald moving away from the officer’s squad car.

According to ABC News, Van Dyke’s legal team maintained that the officer does not pose a flight risk and that he fully intends to fight the first-degree murder charge—a first for a Chicago cop in 35 years—in court. The judge set bond at $1.5 million, and after posting the minimum requirement of $150,000—raised in party by a local branch of the Fraternal Order of Police—Van Dyke exited Cook County Jail around 6:00 p.m. local time Monday.

Police detained 10 protesters at an NAACP rally outside City Hall later that evening. Authorities told Al Jazeera America that the demonstrators were issued citations but were not arrested.
