Things weren't looking great for weddings in the 1960s. Marriage rates were down. Divorce rates were up. Free love was in full swing, and women were questioning their mother's decisions to cook and clean and get dressed up for the men they married.

So it's not totally surprising that wedding dresses from 1966 are not traditional. But we weren't quite prepared for how not traditional they were when we came upon this video from the Associated Press' archives, touting "Futuristic and outlandish fashions from brides from 1966."

The theme seems to be, "So you're marrying an alien in a very cold place where layers are recommended," and the looks range from "snow bunny" to "ice queen" to "robot in a body condom" to "oh my god how can you walk in that."

For example:

And perhaps our favorite, for the elegant, not-quite-waterproof robot bride:

We have to say, though, that the makeup on these brides holds up.
