A Baltimore teacher has been fired after video footage showed her grabbing students and screaming at them in racist and abusive language.
In footage taken by a student, and uploaded to Facebook by parent Erica Esha Deminds, an unnamed science teacher at Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School can be seen angrily addressing her class after ejecting a student for poor behavior. As the teacher grows more agitated over the encounter, she shouts, "you’re idiots! You have a chance to get an education. Do you wanna be a broke ass nigger, who’s going to get shot?"
After a moment of shocked silence, the classroom breaks out in chaos.
In less than 24 hours since she uploaded the video, Deminds' post has racked up over 50,000 shares across Facebook.
When reached for comment, Baltimore Public Schools described the teacher's behavior as "verbally abusive" and said "racially charged comments [were] directed at students." In a statement, BPS said that the teacher is "no longer employed" by the school district, and stressed that:
We are committed to creating positive and equitable learning environments in school communities where all members are welcome, supported, and valued. No form of discriminatory behavior of any kind is or will be tolerated.
The student body at Harlem Park is predominantly African American, with 404 of its 412 students identifying as black in the 2013–2014 school year, the most up-to-date information available from the Department of Education.
