Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade used his time being beamed into the president’s eye-holes this morning to spread fear about the caravan of migrants heading for the U.S. possibly carrying all manner of “diseases.” Hear that dog whistle blow loud and clear!
After giving Donald Trump supporter and NRA TV host Dan Bongino the space to breathlessly argue that a “significant percentage”—“not a majority, not an overwhelming amount, but enough to be concerned” he later clarified—of people crossing the border are apprehended for “some kind of narco-trafficking” or other criminal activity, Kilmeade dropped a non-sequitur for the ages.
“What about diseases?” he asked Bongino, whose only expertise seems to be that he is a former member of the Secret Service. “I mean, there’s a reason that why you can’t bring a kid to school unless he’s inoculated.”
He went on to baselessly claim that “we already give 40-50 percent of our taxable income” to the government for “social programs,” by which he certainly didn’t mean spending on Social Security.
“Is it too much to say we can’t have countries, entire populations come in here without being looked at as hard-hearted?” he said. “To me, it’s a practical way of having a nation that everyone looks up to and wants to be a part of. That’s part of the reason America is America, there’s a process.”
Indeed, allowing immigrants from war-torn, politically oppressive countries to seek better lives in America used to be a reason why America was America. Kilmeade and his ilk refuse to acknowledge that their president has worked very hard to stem the flow—including by making it nearly impossible for these migrants to apply for asylum once they get here. But that wouldn’t make for such a spicy chyron, would it?
