Trump Pins His Administration's Failure to Reunite Immigrant Families On...Immigrant Families

Tuesday is the court-mandated deadline for the government to reunite undocumented children under the age of five with their families, but the Trump administration has already said that it will only be able to reunite a few dozen children. According to President Trump, though, this failure by his government is actually the fault of the people he’s detaining.

Asked by White House reporters on Tuesday about the missed deadline, Trump replied, according to a pool report: “Well, I have a solution. Tell people not to come to our country illegally. That’s the solution.”

Or, just workshopping another idea here, your administration could stop its policy of separating children and babies from their parents while they’re being prosecuted under your “zero tolerance” policy at the border?

When pressed about whether his intention is to punish young children, Trump dodged.

“I’m saying this very simply: We have laws, we have borders. Don’t come to the country illegally. It’s not a good thing,” he said, according to video of his remarks.

There you have it: The Real Bad Thing, in Trump’s mind, are people with nothing to lose desperately fleeing their native countries, rather than the way we treat these vulnerable people once they’re here. Got it.
