Watch Oprah's empowering words to women of color at Essence Festival

Oprah Winfrey delivered an inspirational (does she give any any other type?) speech for women, especially women of color, at the Essence festival in New Orleans on Saturday.

According to the Times-Picayune, Winfrey spoke for nearly an hour, telling the crowd of hundreds that she is “living the dream.”

“Your life is big. Your life is huge, and we spend so much time wanting to be in somebody else’s life, and you don’t get honored, you don’t get revered, you don’t get celebrated wanting what somebody else has,” Winfrey said.

Watch an excerpt from the speech below, where she tells the audience about she once thought rich, white people had trees in their yard and she aspired to have trees in her own yard.

“For everything there is an equal and opposite reaction,” Winfrey said. “It means no matter what you do, what you say, the energy of who you are is going out into the world, into your home, into your relationships and that energy is always coming back to you. You are responsible for the energy that you are putting out into the world because that very energy — bam! —is coming right back to you every single time, whether you believe it or not, because it is law. It is law.”

According to People, Winfrey had the audience on its feet.

This was Winfrey’s first appearance at the Essence Festival, a four-day music festival at New Orleans geared toward African-American women. This year’s line-up featured Selma director Ava DuVernay, Tyra Banks, Janelle Monae, New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu. There were performances by Mariah Carey, Kendrick Lamar and Maxwell.
