As the government reluctantly scrambles to reunite undocumented immigrant children taken from their families ahead of a court-mandated deadline, a new filing from the Justice Department in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of California contains this ominous—and entirely unexplained—update on one of the detained children.

Not only can’t the feds find the kid’s parent, but both the kid and their parent might have been citizens all along? What the fuck?

The filing—which deals specifically with detainees under five years old—does not elaborate beyond the above statement, first noticed by USA Today’s Brad Heath.

Of course, the citizenship issue does not make this situation “worse,” at least not in the moral sense (nobody, no matter their citizenship status, deserves this sort of treatment), but still—what more proof do you need of the dangerous incompetence involved in all of this?

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice responded to a request for comment with the following statement: “We cannot provide information outside of the filing.”
