The conversation around mass shootings in America has become inextricably linked with issues of mental health. But gun violence in the United States is more complicated than that. By shifting the focus from gun control entirely to mental health, we risk scapegoating an already vulnerable population and losing focus on how best to actually help prevent future acts of violence.
